Satellite Control Center crucial for country’s development – president

Luanda – Angolan head of State João Lourenço considered the Satellite Control and Mission Centre, inaugurated Friday, a decisive project for the development and future of Angola, taking into account the potential of the infrastructure.

“We believe that the project is extremely important”, said the Head of State, underlining the fact that the Center can simultaneously operate three satellites.

Located in the Funda area, Luanda province, the Center currently operates a satellite, the Angosat-2 manufactured in Russia.

Speaking to the press, after having toured different areas of the Centre, President João Lourenço said that the other two (satellites) “will have to be acquired over time”.

“It is a matter of programming. If there is no capacity today, there will be tomorrow”, noted the holder of Executive Branch, underlining the need to complete the project.

According to the Statesman, “what counts on is the intention to complete the project (…) and we are committed to completing it no matter how long it takes”.

As for the gains for the country, resulting from the inauguration of the Satellite Control and Mission Centre, João Lourenço highlighted the improvement of telecommunications in areas such as Social Communication, having particularly focused on voice and image services.

Within the framework of the project, the Head of State also highlighted the benefits of the project for agriculture, education and science in general.

Asked whether the country will have the financial capacity to support the construction of more satellites, the President of the Republic said that “Financial capacity can be arranged, all depending on the importance we attach to the project”.

He underlined that the Angolan Government considers the project to be extremely important. “Therefore, the other two will have to be acquired over time. It’s a matter of programming.”

João Lourenço made it clear that the country will continue to invest in projects in the sector, with a view to ensuring the best possible quality of telecommunications in the country.

The inauguration stems from the National Space Strategy and takes place three months after the successful launch into orbit of Angosat-2, an Angolan satellite.

The development was built on a total surface of 6,617 square meters and has 47 compartments equipped with technical and technological means.

The Angosat-2 satellite was launched on October 12, 2022, at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, and is in orbit at position 23E.
