Luanda – Sonangol has ordered the construction, in South Korea, of two oil tankers with capacity to transport 1 million barrels of oil, as part of the strengthening of its Suezmax line fleet.
Of the two tankers, one of the ships began construction on 15 July, for delivery in March 2023, and the second in the following quarter.
The contract is under the supervision of Sonangol’s Trading & Shipping Business Unit (UNTS).
According to the national oil company, in a press release received by ANGOP on Sunday, the start of construction was formalised with the cutting of steel, marking the vessels’ prefabrication phase.
The ship is being built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), in compliance with the technical specifications established by the international shipping market and with environmental standards of maritime pollution containment.
According to the statement, the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Trading & Shipping Business Unit (UNTS), Luís Manuel, said that construction of the tanker was part of the company’s investment plan and that it would bring significant benefits to Angola.
“We have thus achieved one of the planned and programmed objectives within the activities and the effort that has been made for Sonangol to keep its shipping segment activity up to date and, naturally, always in operation,” Luis Manuel noted.
