South Africa mobilizes 10,000 troops to help flood victims

The South African army announced this Monday the mobilization of 10,000 operatives in response to the catastrophic floods that have destroyed the east coast and have already caused 443 deaths and the destruction of thousands of homes.

South Africa has been suffering violent storms for a week that have caused massive floods and landslides, resulting in 63 people missing, in addition to a growing number of dead.

Most of the victims come from the region around Durban, a port city on the Indian Ocean, with 3.5 million inhabitants, in the province of KzaZulu-Natal (KZN).

An official statement quoted by Agence France-Presse reads: “The South African army has received orders to mobilize 10,000 soldiers as part of the Chariot operation.”
