Luanda: South Korea's newly appointed ambassador to Angola, Byong-Jo Kang, signaled a push to expand economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations on Tuesday, pointing to health, technology, and energy as prime areas for deeper cooperation. Speaking after a meeting in Luanda with Vice-President Esperan§a da Costa, Mr. Kang emphasized Seoul's interest in capitalizing on Angola's economic momentum as the two countries mark 35 years of formal diplomatic relations.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the high-level discussions come roughly a month after Mr. Kang formally presented his credentials to President Joo Louren§o, underscoring a swift push by Seoul to reinforce its diplomatic footprint in Southern Africa. Beyond core economic objectives, including joint projects under the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the envoy highlighted an unexpected bridge between the two nations: Korean pop music, or K-pop, has found a growing audience among Angolan youth, a cultural affinity Mr. Kang suggested is drawing the two societies closer together.
Angola, seeking to diversify its oil-reliant economy, views South Korean expertise in industrialization and digital transformation as critical levers for future growth.
