Sport institutions mourn former president dos Santos’ death

Luanda – The Angolan Football Federation (FAF), has joined the manifestations of consternation on the death of the former President of the Republic of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos.

In a note to which ANGOP had access, which binds associations and clubs, FAF considers the former Head of State a fervent lover of sports, particularly football.

“It is no secret that football was one of his greatest passions. He often went down to the pitch to train and transmit ideas of play to the Palancas Negras – Died the “Sportsman lent to Politics,” reads the document.

FAF recalls that José Eduardo dos Santos created the Football Academy of Angola (AFA), in order to detect talents for the modality, reiterating the votes of regret, on behalf of the Angolan lovers of the “king” sport.

F.C. Porto also sent a message of condolence to the Angolan people for the unfortunate event, considering José Eduardo dos Santos a staunch supporter of the Portuguese club.

To the Angolan people and the bereaved family, FC Porto sends its deepest condolences, the Portuguese club’s statement reads.

José Eduardo dos Santos came to power in September 1979, following the death of Angola’s first president, António Agostinho Neto.

The former President of the Republic died Friday, at the age of 79, in Barcelona (Spain), victim of illness.
