Swimming: Angola Falls Short in 50-Meter Freestyle Finals at African Youth Games

Luanda: Angola national swimming team failed to qualify for the finals in the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley categories at the African Youth Games on Tuesday. The hosts' best result was 11th place, achieved at the Alvalade pool.

According to Angola Press News Agency, in the men's 50 meters, Santiago Guimares secured 11th place with a time of 25.34, while Carlos Fernandes finished 17th, clocking 26.15. On the women's side, Maria Parimbello completed the race in 29.67, landing in 17th place, and Chelsea Vunge finished 22nd with a time of 30.50.

In the 200-meter individual medley, Mariana Lima achieved 13th place with a time of 2:56.99, and Williams Nguvo finished 19th with a time of 2:46.62. Notably, Rhanya Santo is set to compete in the 800 meters freestyle, and Santiago Guimares will challenge the 1,500 meters, both advancing directly from the heats to the final based on the best times in all heats.

The direct final system allows for immediate qualification for the medal competition (Final A) without semi-finals, focusing on shorter races or competitions with fewer participants.

During the five days of competition, Angolan swimming celebrated two bronze medals. South Africa currently leads the medal tally with 50 medals, comprising 27 gold, 16 silver, and 7 bronze, followed by Algeria with 17 medals and Tunisia with 12.
