The Journey to Equality Requires Sustained Efforts – Minister

Bolgatanga: Mr. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, emphasized that the journey to equality requires sustained efforts and unwavering dedication. He urged for the establishment of networks that promote the professional and personal growth of women, advocating for a society where every woman and girl can live free from discrimination, pursue their dreams, and contribute meaningfully to society.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Atanga made these remarks during the International Women's Day (IWD) celebration organized by the Women Poultry and Livestock Association (WOPOLA) in Bolgatanga. The IWD, observed annually on March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and calls for accelerating women's equality.

The Minister highlighted that this year's theme, 'For All Women and Girls' Rights to Equality and Empowerment,' is a call to action and a reaffirmation of a collective commitment to advancing human rights, ensuring gender equality, and empowering women to realize their full potential. He noted the significant roles women and girls play in various sectors, such as markets, farmlands, education, healthcare, science, and technology, both in Ghana and globally.

Despite these contributions, Mr. Atanga expressed concern over the persistent challenges women face, including gender-based violence, discrimination, child marriage, limited access to education, and economic disparities. He emphasized the need for policy reforms, community support, and collaborative efforts to overcome these barriers.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that women and girls enjoy their full rights, highlighting strides made in promoting gender-responsive policies, increasing women's representation in governance, and enhancing access to education and healthcare. However, he acknowledged that more work remains to be done.

Mr. Atanga announced plans under the NDC's Reset agenda to establish a Women's Development Bank to support women-owned and women-led businesses with low-interest loans and other tailored financial services. He also committed to implementing the Affirmative Action Act of 2024 (Act 1121) to ensure gender equity across various divides.

Madam Theresa Benedicta Alegmiah, President of WOPOLA, advocated for empowering women, girls, and the physically challenged through capacity building and involvement in activities such as animal husbandry and farming. She expressed pride in marking the IWD in the region for the first time and called on stakeholders to partner with WOPOLA in alleviating poverty among women, girls, and Persons with Disabilities in Ghana. She also thanked the Savannah Investment Programme (SIP) in Tamale for its financial support in organizing the event.
