Dundo – The voluntary repatriation of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), sheltered in the centre of Lóvua, Lunda Norte province, since 2017, suspended in 2020 due to Covid-19, resumed Monday.
According to a note from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), sent to ANGOP today, Tuesday, on the first day of this process, some 88 refugees, a total of 18 families, left and will be repatriated across the borders of Tchicolondo and Chissanda, towards the provinces of Kasai, Kasai Central, Kwilu, Sankuru, Lomami, Lualaba and Kinshasa.
Across the border, they will be received by UNHCR, together with the DRC authorities and partners, who are working to create conditions for the reintegration of these refugees.
Currently the settlement of Lóvua controls seven 7,000 refugees, of which about 10% have expressed their intention to return to the neighbouring DRC.
