USA and Angola discuss bilateral relationship

Washington – Angola and the United States of America assessed Tuesday, in Washington, the state of bilateral relations during a meeting between the Head of State, João Lourenço, and the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit that is taking place in the US capital city until Thursday, with the participation of more than 49 African Leaders and entrepreneurs who were invited by the North American President, Joe Biden.

The meeting was included in João Lourenço´s agenda aiming to strengthen economic diplomacy which has resulted, since Monday, in a meeting of conciliation with entities of several multinational companies and renowned organizations in the US.

The main topic of the meeting between João Lourenço and Antony Blinken, who was accompanied by the US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, was not revealed to journalists.

However, a note from the US-Africa Summit organization made available to the press states that at the meeting, the American representatives reinforced the importance that the US attaches to its relationship with Angola.

The note states that they expressed their appreciation towards the role of Angola as a regional leader including President João Lourenço´s efforts for peacemaking in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as the strong and growing economic and security partnerships.

The note adds that during the meeting the US representatives analysed as well the shared priorities for the US-Africa Leaders´ Summit that marks a turning of the page on economic and trade relations between the United States and Africa.

On the same day, President João Lourenço had a meeting with an important delegation of the World Bank and the subject of the conversation was not revealed.

On Monday, João Lourenço received the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power, with whom he assessed the new strategies to increase cooperation.

He also attended a roundtable with American entrepreneurs, whom he invited to continue investing in Angola, mainly in the agriculture and solar energy sectors.
