Vasco Taveira Triumphs at Optimist World Championship, Secures African Sailing Title

Luanda: Young Angolan sailors Vasco Taveira and Gabriel Calembe distinguished themselves at the 2026 Optimist World Sailing Championship, held from June 18 to 28 in Tangier, Morocco, by securing first and third place, respectively, in the African rankings.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Vasco Taveira was crowned African champion in the category reserved for the continent's nations, while Gabriel Calembe secured third place, placing Angola among the top African finishers in the championship.

The Angolan delegation was led by coach Mateus Afonso and also included athletes Telmo Cambeletete and Emanuela Filipe, who represented the country in the event.

At the competition's closing, the Angolan Nautical Sports Federation congratulated the athletes, the coaching staff, and the entire delegation due to their performance, noting that these results serve as an incentive for the development of the sport and the training of new sailors.

The event was held at the Royal Yacht Club of Tangier and brought together hundreds of young athletes from various countries, marking it as one of the most important international competitions in youth sailing.

The world title was won by Brazil's Manuel Bragan§a, while Angola concluded the competition with one title and a third-place finish in the African rankings.
