Luanda – Angola’s Vice-President, Esperança da Costa, on Wednesday considered positive the country’s participation in COP27, where the nation’s vision on the great challenges related to climate change were disclosed.
“We had our direct participation at the plenary session of COP27, where we stressed our ideas and position on the major challenges of climate change”, Esperança da Costa said, underlining that the country still has a long path to go through regarding this issue.
Ms Costa added that Angola is preparing all the necessary conditions to implement a recovery agenda that forces the country to review the strategies to ensure its sustainable development.
Angola has prepared a 2035 National Strategy on Climate Change, the politician said, adding that its main objective is to provide a nationwide adaptation and resilience, just as it occurred with most of the programmes of drought impact mitigation and other extreme events that have plagued the south of the country.
She went on to praise the construction of the Cafu Canal, which has the purpose of transferring water from Cunene River to the population, creating more availability for the development of agriculture, farming and the welfare of communities, especially cattle breeders.
Angola’s Position and Clean Energy
During the participation in the plenary, in the COP27 side events, audiences and courtesy meetings, Angola stressed its position and alignment with the African group, showing solidarity with several countries that are adopting resilience initiatives, forest conservation, mitigation projects and carbon emission reduction.
However, for the Vice-President of the Republic, all these issues will only be done with the introduction of clean energies such as photovoltaic and wind power.
“Our position is in favour of identifying durable solutions that will lead to combat this major crisis and impact of climate change”, the vice-president said, having defended the production of green hydrogen at a time when there is a commitment from industrialized countries to implementing the Climate Action Fund to encourage the development of technology-based solutions initiative.
Diplomacy
In terms of diplomacy, the presence was also fruitful with the holding of several bilateral meetings with African and European countries, having demonstrated the work in favour of sustainable development and diversification of the economy.
As regard funding, Angola has said its intention is to maintain it with the aim to give continuity to the projects and programmes that have been carried out so far with the support of agencies such as International Fund for Agricultural Development, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Bank.
“We want to work, above all, for the maintenance of sustainability. The World Bank is available to continue funding existing projects, but also looks to the new mandate, which aims to improve and ensure the well-being of the populations”, she said.
