Villages Benefit From Water Tanks

Residents from 25 villages in Turkana Central and Kibish Sub Counties have established Water Tank Management Committees (WTMCs) to oversee the newly donated 10,000-liter water tanks. These committees, which signed an agreement with VSF Germany, will oversee the maintenance, usage, and eventual ownership of the tanks. Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) through VSF Germany, this initiative aims to improve water access for both domestic use and livestock development, addressing the urgent needs following the recent drought in Turkana. The project integrates livestock vaccination services as a critical component of the drought response, funded by the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), and targets pastoral communities. During the distribution of the water tanks, livestock in the villages also received vaccination services. FAO's team lead, Daniel Ilura emphasized that the program's goal is to provide sustainable solutions for water access and animal health in drought- affected areas.Turkana Central Water Quality Inspector, Ruth Lomoro, facilitated the training of the water tank committees, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills for effective management. Erenius Nakadio, Director of Veterinary Services, and Josephine Emase, Deputy Director of Livestock Production, led their teams in executing livestock vaccinations.
