Lubango: Wiliete de Benguela decisively defeated Clube Desportivo 14 de Abril de Menongue 8-1 on Sunday in Lubango. The match marked the opening of Group B in the Southern Regional Senior Women's Championship, with Hula hosting this phase of the competition.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the day also featured Clube Desportivo 4 de Junho do Cunene securing a 2-1 victory over Porto da Hula, while Gloriosos FC da Hula clinched a 2-1 win against Sport Clube do Cuanhama. The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) is promoting this significant event.
The next round of Group B will include matches between 14 de Abril Menongue and Gloriosos F.C. da Hula, CD Porto da Hula against Wiliete SC de Benguela, and Sport Clube do Cuanhama versus CD 4 de Junho do Cunene.
Ana Catarina Alberto, head of the women's football department at FAF, commented that all participating teams are keen to showcase their potential to advance further. She highlighted that the top two teams from Hula will progress to the national championship slated for July and August, with prospects of a women's football league later this year.
Alberto also mentioned that the Eastern zone has already qualified two teams for the zonal rounds. They are awaiting the results from the Southern zone before moving to the Northern region to finalize the selection of 10 to 12 teams for the national championship. The current Group B standings place Wiliete SC de Benguela at the top, followed by Gloriosos FC da Hula and CD 4 de Junho do Cunene, each with three points, while CD Porto da Hula, Sport Clube do Cuanhama, and CD 14 de Abril de Menongue remain without points.
The A series of the Southern zone will commence in the province of Benguela, featuring four teams, with games starting this Monday.
