Luanda: Women from Angola's central Bi© province have called on national and regional authorities to boost social spending, citing critical shortages in healthcare, education, and basic infrastructure across local communities.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the appeal was made on Friday in the provincial capital of Cuito during an event marking African Women's Day, chaired by Bi© Governor Celeste Adolfo. Community representatives highlighted a range of local challenges, including inadequate public health facilities, limited schooling options, and poor road networks.
Elisa Sapalo, representing the municipality of Ringoma, urged authorities to build a secondary school, a maternal and child health center, and a clinical laboratory, while also requesting an ambulance for the area. In Cuito, representative Alberta Gengua called for increased police patrols to curb juvenile crime, alongside the construction of new primary schools and additional civil registration offices to issue identity cards.
Other representatives raised concerns over the lack of cellular coverage in Umpulo, limited access to agricultural credit in Nharea, and the need for clean water systems and vocational training centers in Catabola and Chinguar. In response, Governor Adolfo pledged government commitment to targeted social programs aimed at strengthening family welfare and female empowerment across education, health, and agriculture. She urged women to form cooperatives to better participate in local development projects.
