Luanda – The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) appealed Thursday in Luanda to Angolans to wait with “calm and serenity” for the conclusion of the counting and publication of the results of Wednesday´s general elections (24 August).
At a press conference, UNITA party secretary for electoral affairs, Faustino Mumbica, advised against any kind of protest in the streets while the votes are being counted.
“The process is not yet finished. We are doing our work with all patience. What we are going to ask all Angolans is let us manage to walk together in harmony”, he expressed.
According to the politician, UNITA is doing a parallel count of the ballot results based on the summary minutes signed at polling stations, saying that the party expects more encouraging results in the next announcement by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
The latest provisional results, released this evening by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), give the MPLA 51.07 per cent of the votes (corresponding roughly to 3.1 million votes), followed by UNITA with 44.05 per cent (roughly 2.7 million, 90 parliamentarhy seats secured), and the PRS with 1.13% (70,398 votes, 2 MPs).
The FNLA comes next with 1.05% (65,223/2 MPs), followed by the PHA with 1.01% (63,002/ gaining 2 MPS), then comes the only coalition, CASA-CE, with 0.75% (46,750), a result that does not enable them to a single parliamentary seat, which is the same case with the APN that got 0.48% (29,740) and the P-NJANGO with 0.42% (26,268 votes).
According to the Spokesman of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Lucas Quilundo, the tallying continues and in the upcoming hours, perhaps on Friday, the final results are to be announced by the institution.
These were the fifth elections in Angola.
