MPLA wants women to take active role in local government process

Luanda – Angola’s ruling MPLA party’s vice president Luísa Damião defended permanent and constructive dialogue on the implementation of the local government and urged women to actively participate in the process.

Luisa Damião stressed the need of women’s participation in the process at the opening ceremony of the III ordinary meeting of the National Committee of the party’s women wing (OMA), held in Municipality of Talatona, Luanda, as part of the government programme for 2022-2027 period.

 

Luísa Damião insisted on the need for women to “actively participate” and not give up their contribution.

The leader said that in the current phase of the process, there are political challenges that require high intelligence from OMA members.

 

As for the results of the general elections, in which the MPLA elected 26 MPs less than in the previous election, Luísa Damião said it was important to evaluate the quality and the intensity of OMA’s participation in the party’s win.

 

Chaired by the general secretary of the OMA, Joana Tomás, the regular meeting focuses on the analysis of internal issues and on taking stock of activities carried out by the organisation.

Angola/China trade reaches 30% growth

Luanda – Angola and China trade stood at around US$20 billion from January to August 2022, the Chinese ambassador to Angola, Gong Tao, revealed Thursday in Luanda.

Comparing with the previous period, there was a 30% increase in trade relations between the two countries.

Since 2007, Angola has become China’s largest trading partner in Africa, with a turnover estimated at US$24.8 billion in 2010 alone.

Speaking to the press, the ambassador attributed the increase to Chinese companies operating in the most varied sectors in Angola, as well as the Asian giant’s commitment to economic relations.

In the agriculture sector, for example, he pointed out the commitment  to the cultivation of rice, corn, vegetables, fruits and other products.

He added that there are also Chinese companies producing eggs, assembling mobile phones, televisions, containers, Chinese cars.

He also stressed his country’s support for the Angolan government in the modernisation of sectors such as justice, with high-tech equipment for the production and issuance of identity card (ID).

According to the diplomat, China will continue to support Angola towards sustainable development, taking advantage of opportunities for mutual benefit.

In turn, the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Nuno Caldas Albino, highlighted the fact that China has been, for about 40 years, a strategic partner of Angola, reaching out in the most difficult moments.

He stressed that in the field of social communication, China has been an active partner, supporting the training of staff at major Chinese universities.

“(…) This is an important step so that in the coming years training and exchanges between the various media in the two countries will be priorities”, he stressed.

Debt payment

Regarding the fact that Angola has anticipated the payment of public debt with one of the largest creditors (China), as part of the signed agreements, the ambassador considers it to have been a smart choice, adding that China is available to continue supporting the Angolan Government.

He highlighted the reforms carried out by the Government in recent years, having an economy that is less and less dependent on oil, focused on diversifying the economy.

The diplomat stressed that there is strong hope for good growth in the coming years for the Angolan economy.

According to Gong Tao, in the last 20 years, Angola has received Chinese funding for various works in airports, railways, satellite cities, hospitals, schools and dams, contributing to the country’s growth.

He highlighted the fact that the Angolan economy shows great resilience, strength and dynamics, despite the current difficulties.

“Currently, financing is an important area. But the areas of investment and trade remain strong, because China, in the last 10 and 15 years, has been Angola’s first trading partner”, he noted.

AGT’s data indicate that China continues to be Angola’s biggest trading partner, remaining in the first place in the list of the biggest clients for exports of Angolan goods, especially oil.

The Asian giant bought, between January and June 2022, goods worth USD 9.9 billion, equivalent to 47.8% of total national exports to the rest of the world.

Minister of Culture welcomes Afro-Americans tourists

Talatoma – A group of Afro-American tourists, made up of 27 dancers and lovers of the Angola’s kizomba style music, were welcomed Thursday in Luanda by the Minister of Culture, Filipe Nzau.

The group, which has been in Angola since October 20, 2022, at the invitation of the Angolan Kunanga Agency, will enjoy a Kizomba festival in the coming days and expressed interest in the cultural exchange.

During the meeting, the head of group praised the international appreciation of the kizomba rhythm in other countries.

To the minister, who heard all those involved in the group, the country’s cultural values is beyond kizomba, although it can serve as an element of motivation for the development of cultural tourism.

He stressed that the group will start rehearsing with the Ministry of Economy and Planning as part of the “Made in Angola” project, to unite kizomba lovers overseas and beyond

Angola has over 70 million square metres of landmines

 

Luanda – Atleast seventy six million, 188,206 square metres is the total area contaminated with explosive devices in the country, the director-general of the National Mining Agency, Brigadier Leonardo Sapalo said Thursday, in Luanda.

This data was presented during the meeting between the National Mine Action Agency (ANAM) and the Office of Weapons Removal in the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA).

 

According to the general director of the National Mines Agency, brigadier Leonardo Sapalo, the country still has many contaminated areas with explosive devices and their elimination will only be possible with a joint effort between the government and partners reflected in the meeting held with an American delegation.

 

The partner is a strong worldwide donor in action against mines, emphasizing that according to the mapping of the provinces of Moxico with 235 square meters, Bié with 116, Cuanza Sul with 100 and Cuando Cubango with 78, has the largest areas with mines.

 

The official considered important mobilization to encourage the donors, not only non-governmental organizations, but also for the National Demining Center which will work together to gradually eliminate all contaminated areas.

 

He said that the success of mine elimination until 2025 includes the continued training of staff and investments to get appropriate financial resources which will support the acquisition of equipment for the demining operation.

 

“Angola signed the Ottawa Convention in 1997, but its implementation was only achieved with the conquest of peace, having the obligation to eliminate all known (mined) areas until 2025”, reinforced the official.

 

According to the American delegation representative, Ms Aisha Kamara, the government of her country is committed to supporting Angola in eliminating mines to consolidate peace, security and economic prosperity of all Angolans.

 

She said that up to now, the United States of America (USA) already invested USD 149.9 million to fight mines and they will continue supporting Angola, especially the provinces of Moxico, Cuando Cubango and Bié through the Okavango Delta Project to facilitate ecotourism.

 

She stressed that with qualified staff and resources, it is possible to eliminate mines by 2025 and even if this does not happen, the US will continue to support these efforts.

 

In 1997, the treaty was signed by 157 countries. The Ottawa Convention was not adopted by 38 countries, among them the United States, Cuba, Russia, India and China.

 

Data from the last six years show that Angola has already cleared 90% of the areas suspected of mine contamination.

 

According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), the Landmine Monitor, Angola remains among the countries classified as having massive contamination, with more than 100 square kilometres of areas with landmines and other explosive devices.

 

According to the data, in 2018 mines caused 28 accidents, which resulted in the death of 19 people, eight of them children, and injuries, some of them serious and another 45, a third of them, 30, also children.

 

The figures indicate that the demining process in Angola has cost over USD 500 million (446 million euros) since 2002.

UN: Greenhouse Gas Cuts Needed to Prevent Climate Catastrophe

GENEVA – A U.N. report warns the window for preventing a climate catastrophe is fast closing. The U.N. Environment Program’s latest Emissions Gap Report urges unprecedented cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and a rapid transformation of societies to head off the worst.

The U.N. report finds the world is falling far short of the Paris climate goals agreement, with no credible pathway for limiting a temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen said progress since last year’s climate change conference, COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland, has been woefully inadequate. She said nations have failed to deliver on their pledges for greater emissions cuts.

She noted greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by 45 percent by 2030 to stop climate change. However, instead of stabilizing global temperatures at 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial level, she said temperatures will likely rise 2.4 to 2.6 degrees by 2100.

“We are sliding from climate crisis to climate disaster. This report is sending us a very, very clear message. If we are serious about climate change, we need to kickstart a system-wide transformation now. We need a root and branch redesign of the electricity sector, of the transport sector, of the building sector, and food systems.”

Additionally, she said financial systems must be reformed so they can bankroll the required transformations. She says incremental changes no longer are an option. Bold action must be taken now.

Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization Peterri Talaas called the transformational changes doable. He noted the IPCC, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, earlier this year reported that prices of climate-friendly energy solutions have been dropping.

“Nowadays, it is cheaper to invest in solar or wind energy as compared to the fossil energy. And the good news is also that 32 countries have reduced their emissions during the past 15 years, whereas their economies have been growing. So, there is not an automatic connection between economic growth and emissions growth.”

He mentioned European countries, the United States, Japan, and Singapore as some of the countries that have managed to grow their economies while reducing emissions.

Environmental experts estimate a global transformation to a low-emissions economy is expected to require investments of at least $4 trillion to $6 trillion a year. They are urging nations attending next week’s COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to agree to foot the bill and to up their pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Hawaii’s Big Island Gets Warning as Huge Volcano Rumbles

Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt.

Scientists say an eruption isn’t imminent, but they are on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit. Experts say it would take just a few hours for lava to reach homes closest to vents on the vo

.emergency. They recommend having a “go” bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members.

“Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

The volcano makes up 51% of the Hawaii Island landmass, so a large portion of the island has the potential to be affected by an eruption, Magno said.

There’s been a surge of development on the Big Island in recent decades — its population has more than doubled to 200,000 today from 92,000 in 1980 — and many newer residents weren’t around when Mauna Loa last erupted 38 years ago. All the more reason why Magno said officials are spreading the word about the science of the volcano and urging people to be prepared.

Mauna Loa, rising 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above sea level, is the much larger neighbor to Kilauea volcano, which erupted in a residential neighborhood and destroyed 700 homes in 2018. Some of its slopes are much steeper than Kilauea’s so when it erupts, its lava can flow much faster.

During a 1950 eruption, the mountain’s lava traveled 15 miles (24 kilometers) to the ocean in less than three hours.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which is part of the U.S. Geological Survey, said Mauna Loa has been in a state of “heightened unrest” since the middle of last month when the number of summit earthquakes jumped from 10 to 20 per day to 40 to 50 per day.

Scientists believe more earthquakes are occurring because more magma is flowing into Mauna Loa’s summit reservoir system from the hot spot under the earth’s surface that feeds molten rock to Hawaii’s volcanoes.

The temblors have declined in frequency in recent days but could rise again.

More than 220 people attended a community meeting last weekend that county civil defense officials held in Ocean View, a neighborhood that lava could reach in hours if molten rock erupts through vents on Mauna Loa’s southwest flank.

Bob Werner, an Ocean View resident who didn’t attend the meeting, said it’s wise to be aware of a possible eruption but not to fear it. He’s not concerned that the neighborhood would be completely cut off, if lava flows across the only road connecting it to the bigger towns of Kailua-Kona and Hilo, where many people do their shopping.

The “greater concern is it will be extremely annoying to drive an extra hour or two hours to get the same stuff,” he said.

Ryan Williams, the owner of the Margarita Village bar in Hilo, said the volcanic unrest wasn’t worrying customers who are used to warnings.

There could still be a heightened sense of urgency since officials have been holding town hall meetings, urging people to prepare.

“But everything I’ve read or heard, they trying to kind of assure people that conditions have not changed,” Williams said. “There’s no imminent eruption, but just to be alert.”

Magno said his agency is talking to residents now because communities closest to vents likely wouldn’t have enough time to learn how to respond and prepare once the observatory raises its alert level to “watch,” which means an eruption is imminent.

The current alert level is “advisory” meaning the volcano is showing signs of unrest yet there’s no indication an eruption is likely or certain.

Residents in other parts of the island would have more time to react.

Lava from Mauna Loa’s northeast flank could take days or weeks to reach residential communities. That’s because the mountain’s slopes on that side are relatively gentle and because towns are farther from volcanic vents.

Frank Trusdell, research geologist at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, said all of Mauna Loa’s eruptions in recorded history have started in its summit crater. About half of them stayed there, while the other half later spewed lava from vents lower down the mountain.

Lava erupting from the summit generally doesn’t travel far enough to reach residential areas.

Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843. It last erupted in 1984 when lava flowed down its eastern flank only to stop 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) short of Hilo, the Big Island’s most populous town.

Mauna Loa also has a history of disgorging huge volumes of lava.

In the 1950 eruption, which lasted for 23 days, Mauna Loa released 1,000 cubic meters (1,307 cubic yards) of lava per second. In contrast, Kilauea released 300 cubic meters (392 cubic yards) per second in 2018.

The earthquakes could continue for a while before any eruption: increased seismic activity lasted for a year before a 1975 eruption and a year-and-a-half before the 1984 one. Alternatively, the temblors could subside and Mauna Loa may not erupt this time.

Trusdell said residents should look at his agency’s maps and learn how quickly lava may show up in their neighborhood. He also urged people living in one of the short-notice areas to pay attention if the summit turns red.

“All you got to do is look up there and see the glow. You grab your stuff, throw it in the car and drive. Go!” he said.

They can always go home after if the lava ultimately doesn’t flow into their neighborhood, he said.

This prospective, multicenter registry offers an opportunity to understand the varied usages for the VBX Stent Graft to treat different pathologies in a wide range of anatomical locations. These include lesion exclusion (non-iatrogenic, such as aneurysmatic disease, or iatrogenic, inclusive of ruptures or perforation), visceral perfusion (including fenestrated/branched bridging stent), luminal reconstruction (arteriovenous fistulas) or occlusive disease with the exception of de novo iliac occlusive disease.
