Cairo: The Angolan ambassador to Egypt, Maquento Sebastio Lopes, recently joined a delegation of African diplomats for a comprehensive tour of Egypt's burgeoning new administrative capital. The city, under construction as a hub for diplomatic missions, international organizations, and diplomatic residences, is an ambitious project by the Egyptian government.
According to Angola Press News Agency, shared with Angola Press News Agency, the visit was preceded by a significant meeting with the construction company overseeing the project's development. This meeting, attended by Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, underscored the Egyptian government's appeal to African diplomatic missions to expedite their participation in the project. The location's strategic advantages and cost-effective options for establishing diplomatic representations were key points emphasized during the discussions.
During their tour, the diplomats were introduced to various housing projects and designated mission spaces within the new capital. The infrastructure includes approximately 200 houses and buildings featuring over 300 apartments in configurations of T2, T3, and T4, along with detailed information on acquisition costs and conditions.
The new administrative capital, situated approximately 100 kilometers from Cairo, marks a significant shift as Egypt progressively relocates diplomatic and consular missions, as well as international organization offices, to this planned administrative nucleus. This transition began in earnest at the end of 2022, with the Egyptian government relocating state employees, a move expected to encompass up to 30,000 individuals.
In tandem with this, Egyptian authorities have mandated that diplomatic and consular missions establish their operations in the new city, which offers infrastructure tailored to the needs of foreign representations. Covering an area of around 700 square kilometers and strategically positioned between the Cairo-Suez and Cairo-Ain Sokhna highways, the capital's construction commenced in 2015. Upon completion, it is projected to accommodate about 6.5 million residents.
