New york: Angolan Foreign Minister T©te Ant³nio advocated Saturday in New York for a dynamic United Nations to advance the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and address global peace and security issues. The Angolan foreign minister was speaking to the press during the eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly, in which Angola is participating with a delegation led by the President of the Republic and the African Union, Joo Louren§o.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister highlighted that, 80 years after the creation of the United Nations, there remain numerous challenges such as the need to reinvigorate the Security Council, which he noted has struggled to fulfill its role of ensuring global peace and security. The minister emphasized the importance of resolving these issues collaboratively, as they concern all 193 member states of the global organization.
He further noted Angola's increased responsibilities at the assembly, given that President Joo Louren§o is representing not only Angola but also Africa, in his capacity as leader of the African Union. Ant³nio underscored the significance of Angola's participation in the general debate and various specialized side events, which include important discussions on health issues and United Nations Security Council reform.
He cited the Summit of the African Union Peace and Security Council and the reform of the Security Council as critical events, particularly due to the Security Council's dysfunction amidst global conflicts. Ant³nio argued that this ineffectiveness tarnishes the UN's image, urging member states to establish dialogue channels to address current challenges.
As part of the UN General Assembly's high-level week, the Global Summit for Peace will occur, featuring a message from President Louren§o promoting peace, unity, and prosperity. Organized by the Africa Business Initiative, the event aligns with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's Agenda 2063. It aims to mobilize African leaders and the continent's private sector to enhance business, trade, and investment opportunities.
Additionally, the summit, led by K. A. Paul, President of the Global Peace Initiative, will include Heads of State, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and other world leaders. The Summit on Public-Private Partnerships will also take place, offering a new platform for policymakers and global business leaders to forge actionable partnerships.
Furthermore, the 7th Summit of the Committee of Heads of State and Government of the African Union on the reform of the United Nations Security Council will occur, reflecting Angola's commitment to correcting historical injustices against Africa and fostering a more equitable multilateral order. The general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly will commence on Tuesday, focusing on the theme "Better Together: 80 Years for Peace, Development and Human Rights," under the leadership of Annalena Baerbock, the fifth woman to chair the session in the UN's history.
