Angola and Tanzania Pledge to Strengthen Parliamentary Cooperation

Dar es Salaam:Angola and Tanzania have expressed a mutual interest in enhancing inter-parliamentary cooperation. This commitment was conveyed during a meeting in Dar es Salaam between the Presidents of the Parliaments of Angola, Adão de Almeida, and Tanzania, Mussa Zungu. The meeting was part of the CIRGL Women Parliamentarians Conference, held from November 2 to 4, where both leaders discussed the potential for sharing knowledge and developing joint initiatives to enhance the institutional capacities of their respective countries.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the discussions also covered opportunities to deepen cooperation between the legislative bodies of Angola and Tanzania. Adão de Almeida emphasized the historic ties between the two nations, highlighting Tanzania's support during Angola's struggle for national liberation. He noted that recent state visits by the leaders of both countries have paved the way for enhanced cooperation, particularly within the parliamentary sphere.

Adão de Almeida expressed a desire for a more structured dialogue and exchange framework between the Angolan and Tanzanian Parliaments, focusing on sharing legislative experiences and improving parliamentary oversight mechanisms. Mussa Azzan Zungu confirmed the Tanzanian Parliament's commitment to working closely with Angola to promote peace and security, and announced plans to send a delegation to Angola to learn from the Angolan Parliament's experiences.

The meeting also addressed regional peace and security issues, with discussions on establishing early warning and conflict prevention mechanisms in the Great Lakes region. In his role as acting President of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL), Adão de Almeida discussed preparations for the Women Parliamentarians Conference and praised Tanzania for hosting the event, which aims to promote women's roles in peacebuilding and development.

Both parliamentary leaders acknowledged the significance of the conference in enhancing dialogue among regional parliaments and strengthening women's participation in decision-making processes, particularly in conflict prevention and peacebuilding initiatives. Angola and Tanzania continue to uphold robust relations, fortified by their involvement in regional and international organizations such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU), and their participation in multilateral parliamentary forums.
