Angola and Uruguay Explore New Avenues for Educational and Cultural Cooperation

Montevideo: Angola and Uruguay have embarked on a mission to enhance their cooperative efforts in the fields of education and culture. This development emerged from a meeting held on Tuesday in Montevideo between Azevedo Xavier Francisco, the Angolan ambassador to Uruguay, and Gabriela Verde, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the meeting facilitated a dialogue on various mechanisms aimed at invigorating the political relations and cooperative engagements between the two nations. Ambassador Francisco emphasized Angola's keen interest in fostering cultural exchanges with Uruguay, particularly in dance, music, visual arts, and cinema. He also underscored the importance of bolstering higher education cooperation through scholarships, staff training, technical support, and the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Moreover, Francisco highlighted Angola's desire to leverage technology in primary education by introducing computer equipment in schools, aiming to modernize and elevate the quality of education. In response, Gabriela Verde noted Uruguay's current presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and pointed out existing cooperation frameworks with African nations in the realms of education and culture.

The Uruguayan official articulated her country's eagerness to deepen connections with African states, particularly in the arts sector. Highlighting ongoing academic cooperation initiatives, she mentioned collaboration with countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo. Verde also introduced a program involving IT devices for general education, which Angola could potentially evaluate for its educational system.

Additionally, Verde announced CELAC's new initiatives designed to foster closer ties between Latin America and Africa. Among the proposals discussed was the prospect of Angola's Minister of Education visiting Uruguay to gain insights into its educational system and pinpoint specific areas for collaboration.

Both parties considered the potential signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize bilateral cooperation in education, personnel training, technology transfer, and cultural exchanges. The meeting also delved into strategies to enhance the cultural rapport between Angola and Uruguay, with a focus on cinema, dance, and other artistic pursuits.
