Luanda: The Director of the Luanda Provincial Health Office, Manuel Varela, announced that Angola remains among the countries with the highest rates of teenage pregnancy globally. For every thousand pregnancies, 112 occur in girls aged 15 to 19, surpassing the sub-Saharan Africa average, as reported by the World Health Organization. According to Angola Press News Agency, Varela addressed this issue at the inaugural workshop of the Kilamba Kiaxi Specialized General Hospital in Luanda, themed 'Impact of Teenage Pregnancy, A Multidisciplinary View.' He highlighted this as a significant public health concern, linking the high rates to school dropouts, poverty, violence, and social exclusion among youth. He emphasized that the lack of access to sex education and health services are key contributing factors, which are currently being targeted by public campaigns and policies focused on prevention and opportunity promotion for adolescents. Varela urged a reflection on the current and future implications for commun ities, underscoring Angola's commitment to development and the necessity of preventative measures to mitigate the impact of teenage pregnancy. He also warned that the country's new political and administrative division would reduce the number of health facilities in Luanda province from 183 to 108, posing challenges for the health sector, despite constitutional commitments to health as a fundamental right. In this challenging context, health professionals are called to update and improve knowledge and techniques to address local to global social phenomena effectively. The director-general of Kilamba Kiaxi Specialized Hospital, Nazaré Jerónimo, disclosed that from June 2024 to June 2025, the hospital registered 1,800 pregnant adolescents, averaging 12 daily treatments. The hospital offers special consultations for adolescents to prevent embarrassment and discrimination by their families. Jerónimo urged parents to engage in early, open dialogues about sexuality and family planning, overcoming societal taboos. The workshop covered topics like the profile of pregnant adolescents, strategies for preventing teenage pregnancy, and care for newborns of teenage mothers. The event was attended by hospital directors, municipal health officials, pregnant adolescents, and other stakeholders.
