Luanda: Angola recorded 6,055 accidents (less 143) in the last six months of this year, with 1,482 (-117) deaths and 8,582 (+31) injuries, which corresponds to a reduction of one percent, the National Director of Road Traffic, Abel Sebastio, reported on Thursday. Speaking to the press at the end of the 2nd Extraordinary Meeting of the National Council for Traffic and Transport Planning (CNVOT), chaired by the Vice President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, Sebastio said there had been a 4% reduction in deaths and a 0.1% increase in injuries. According to Angola Press News Agency, Sebastio noted that the age group most affected by road accidents was 36 to 45 years old, mostly male, with the main victims accounting for 57% of deaths and 52% of injuries. The accidents involving pedestrians and collisions between cars, skidding followed by rollovers, and collisions between motorcycles are the most common. Luanda, with 1,127, Huíla (565), Huambo (484), Uíge (395), Benguela (351), and Zaire (350) top the list of provinces with most accidents recorded, while those with the fewest accidents were Cuando, Moxico Leste, and Cubango. According to the national director, the report highlights the recent increase in accidents, particularly in the provinces of Huíla, Huambo, Bengo, and Cuanza Sul. The CNVOT is the advisory body to the Head of the Executive Branch on matters relating to transportation and traffic management at the national level. It is coordinated by the Vice President of the Republic. Created under Presidential Decree 18/13 of April 15, CNVOT is responsible, among other duties, for promoting safety and proposing the approval of laws and other measures aimed at solving road traffic problems.
