Angola Seeks Extension for Compliance with Anti-Personnel Mines Ban

Geneva: Angola made effective on Monday its third request for an extension of the deadline for compliance with the obligations of Article 5 of the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Anti-Personnel Mines until 2030.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the request was presented at the 22nd Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines. This meeting is taking place from December 1 to 5 in Geneva, Switzerland. The event, chaired by the Japanese ambassador to the UN in Geneva, aims to discuss and plan the future of demining programs, focusing particularly on countries seeking extensions for meeting their obligations.

The current deadline for Angola to comply with Article 5 spans from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2025. Angola's request for an extension is now effective and is justified by a pre-established program presented on March 28 to the Committee for the Implementation of Article 5 of the Convention. This program has been shared with other state parties and international and non-governmental organizations dedicated to achieving a world free of anti-personnel mines.

According to the National Mine Action Agency (ANAM), a detailed work plan has been developed to implement the extension request. This plan is aligned with Angola's National Development Plan (PDN 2023-2027), the National Strategic Mine Action Plan (2026-2030), and the Siem Reap-Angkor Action Plan.
