Angola Strengthens Commitment to International Peacekeeping Cooperation

New york: Angola reiterated its commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the field of peacekeeping operations on Tuesday during a meeting between the General Commander of the National Police, Commissioner General Francisco Ribas da Silva, and UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the Angolan delegation's participation in the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) in New York (USA). During the meeting, the General Commander expressed the Angolan National Police's appreciation for the United Nations' ongoing support for institutional capacity-building, highlighting the deployment of a team of certified trainers to the country. This team conducted "Train-the-Trainer" and pre-deployment training courses for peacekeeping operations in November 2025.

He emphasized that these training initiatives marked a significant milestone in developing national capabilities, enabling the National Police to achieve a high level of autonomy in planning and executing training programs to prepare personnel for international missions. He added that this support has been crucial in enhancing the institution's operational readiness and qualifying personnel capable of joining United Nations peacekeeping missions.

It is also noted that the General Commander presented the progress made in establishing and consolidating Angola's Peace Operations Center, with the aim of transforming the facility into a national and regional benchmark for the education, training, and certification of personnel for peacekeeping operations. In this context, the General Commander expressed Angola's interest in deepening technical cooperation with the United Nations, focusing on curriculum development, course certification, trainer capacity-building, and the institutional strengthening of the Center.

He reaffirmed the country's commitment to contributing increasingly significantly to international efforts to promote peace and security. The parties also reviewed the status of the deployment process for the personnel approved during the assessment conducted in Luanda in December 2025 by the Security Assessment Advisory Team (SAAT).

Francisco Ribas da Silva reiterated that the National Police of Angola remain committed to meeting all operational, administrative, and logistical requirements established by the United Nations for participation in peacekeeping missions. He also expressed the expectation that the deployment process would move forward rapidly, enabling the integration of the first Angolan personnel into United Nations peacekeeping operations. He further reaffirmed the National Police's full readiness to continue working in close coordination with the UN, in accordance with the highest international standards.

For his part, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix congratulated Angola on the progress made in preparing for participation in peacekeeping missions, commending the country's commitment to establishing itself as an active contributor to this effort. He also reaffirmed the United Nations' readiness to continue providing technical and institutional support to the National Police of Angola, monitoring the preparation process and the future deployment of Angolan personnel.
