Mavinga: Angolan President Joo Louren§o expressed regret on Tuesday in Mavinga that the country's new political-administrative division was not implemented five or ten years ago, which would have allowed for the development of the three newly formed provinces to be accelerated. The new political-administrative division, approved on September 5, 2024, resulted in the creation of the provinces of Cuando, Moxico Leste, and Icolo e Bengo.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Louren§o, while addressing the people of Mavinga in the newly formed Cuando province, emphasized that if the decision had been made earlier, the region's level of development would be much more advanced today. He highlighted that infrastructure projects, such as the road connecting Cuito Cuanavale to Mavinga and the Mavinga/Dirico road, would be operational, and there would be more schools, hospitals, and improved communications.
The President assured the population that despite the delay, there is now a stronger political will to accelerate development projects. "Better late than never," he stated, emphasizing the government's commitment to executing planned projects at an accelerated pace to bring progress to the region.
During his visit to Cuando province, President Louren§o held a meeting with the provincial government to discuss the socioeconomic situation and strategies for development. His itinerary also included engagements with local leaders and religious entities, as well as the delivery of goods and vehicles to aid in the province's development. He also planned to visit the site of the new city of Mavinga.
The province of Cuando, established on September 5, 2024, was carved out from the eastern part of Cuando-Cubango province. It shares borders with Angolan provinces Cubango and Moxico, Zambia to the east, and Namibia to the southeast and south. The region is characterized by its river systems and is part of the Cubango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, known for its ecological significance and protected areas.
