Luanda: Angolan Vice President Hope of Costa met with ecclesiastical entities on Thursday to discuss ongoing efforts towards fostering dialogue for peace across the African continent. The meeting underscored the role of religious organizations in promoting stability and unity within the region.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Vladimir Agostinho, Secretary of the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA), highlighted the importance of continuous dialogue in achieving peace. He noted that while international organizations have previously attempted to mediate peace in Angola, success was only realized when Angolans themselves committed to open discussions. This history underscores the significance of reinforcing dialogue among local populations, civil society, and political parties to strengthen unity not only in Angola but throughout Africa.
Agostinho emphasized that Vice President Costa expressed openness to collaboration, especially as Angola assumes greater responsibility in continental conflict mediation efforts. Reflecting on the Democratic Republic of Congo and other regions, he pointed out Angola's commitment to promoting peace and stability in Africa.
During the meeting, discussions also covered the challenges faced by churches, including human dignity, social justice, and the reversal of moral values. Agostinho mentioned a program initiated by the Angola Christian Churches Council aimed at supporting economically disadvantaged widows, demonstrating the church's active role in addressing socio-economic issues.
Minister of Culture Filipe Zau commented on the strengthened cooperation between the churches and the state, noting that these ties are crucial for advancing peace and reparation initiatives led by the African Union. Zau reiterated that principles such as peace, democratic governance, social justice, and human rights remain fundamental and must be upheld.
Lesmore Ezequiel, director of programs at the Church Conference of All Africa, echoed the sentiment that collaboration between Angola and religious entities is vital for improving the quality of life for the nation's citizens. The meeting served as a platform to reinforce the commitment of church leaders and government officials to work together towards achieving lasting peace and development in the region.
He clarified that the Conference of Churches throughout Africa (Cita) that brings together more than 200 million Christians throughout the African continent has developed several activities in the health and education sector.
