Bailundo Intensifies Rice Production to Strengthen Food Security

Bailundo: The municipality of Bailundo, located in Huambo province, has taken significant steps to intensify rice production for the 2024/2025 season, as stated by the local director of Agriculture, Domingo Catombela, on Thursday. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance food security and promote sustainable development in the region. According to Angola Press News Agency, the project involves peasant families who are organized into cooperatives and associations. These groups have already commenced rice production, targeting the strategic goals of generating employment, combating poverty, and stimulating the local economy. In the current campaign, approximately 400 tons of rice have been harvested, marking a commitment to establish rice as a key agricultural product. Domingo Catombela highlighted that production efforts span areas ranging from one to 20 hectares. The local administration is actively implementing agricultural projects that aim to support community sustainability. To further aid this goal, the Agrarian Development Station (EDA) has developed technical training programs. These programs are designed to enhance the productive capabilities of peasant families and improve crop quality. The director also mentioned that the local administration is conducting awareness sessions to promote agricultural values and encourage rural entrepreneurship. These efforts are intended to increase employability within the communities. In addition to rice, Bailundo is recognized for producing other crops such as corn, beans, massambala, massango, sweet potato, vegetables, and fruits. These products are gaining popularity in the national market, supporting the municipality's agricultural diversification and economic resilience.
