Bornito de Sousa, Fernando da Piedade suspend mandates at National Assembly

Luanda – Angola’s National Assembly (AN) Thursday unanimously approved the draft resolution on suspension of the mandates of the ruling MPLA party’s MPs Bornito de Sousa, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos and Ana Dias Lourenço.

Bornito de Sousa, number five on the National Electoral Constituency’s list, served as Vice-President of the Republic, while Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, six, was the Speaker of the Parliament in the last term.

The two members suspended their mandates in the Parliament due to material impossibility, under the terms of paragraph 2 of article 149 of the Constitution of the Republic.

Ana Afonso Dias Lourenço, number 19 on the National Electoral Constituency’s list, who also suspended her mandate in the “house of laws”, is the current First Lady of the Republic.

Adão de Almeida, Manuel José Nunes Júnior, Ana Paula Chantre Luna de Carvalho and Dionísio Manuel da Fonseca also suspended their mandates, due to incompatibility of functions, as did the provincial governors.

Adão de Almeida, number 9 on the National Electoral Constituency’s list, and Manuel Nunes Júnior, 13, are Minister of State for the Civil Affairs Office to the President of Republic and minister of State for Economic Coordination, respectively.

The MPLA Parliamentary Group asked the Speaker to carry out some changes in view of the suspension of the mandates by the MPs who exercise functions that prevent their permanent participation in the activities.

The parliamentarians approved the draft resolution for the temporary replacement of the substitute MPs called for the effectiveness of their functions.

New parliamentarians take the oath

Among the 26 new deputies, who took the oath before the Speaker of AN, stress goes to Graciete Chivaca Mateus Sangua, Nvunda Salucombo, Hemingarda João Fernandes, Pedro Sebastião, Maria de Lourdes Caposso Fernandes, Elisandra Coelho, Manuel da Cruz Neto, Maria Odete Tavares and Nazário Pedro Villena.

FNLA and PRS form parliamentary group

The political parties of the FNLA and the PRS formalised Thursday their mixed parliamentary group, led by Benedito Daniel and Nimi a Simbi (FNLA) as deputy president, as the two parties – PRS and FNLA – failed  to obtain, in the general elections, a minimum of required three seats.

Of the 220 MPs,  124 are from the MPLA and 90 of UNITA, while the PRS, the FNLA and the PHA, each have two, as a result of the elections on 24 August.
