Luanda: Chess players Jaime Sonhy and Jemima Paulo emerged victorious in the 2nd edition of the ‘INEA Grand Prix 2025’, a key event in the Angolan Chess Federation’s official calendar, contributing to the national circuit standings.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the tournament spanned three days and featured seven rounds of intense competition. Jaime Sonhy clinched the men’s title by amassing 5.5 points, which included five victories, one draw, and a single loss. In the decisive final round, he secured his lead by drawing with EdivSnio Domingos.
Anderson Joo claimed second place with five points, while Alexandre Próspero and EdivSnio Domingos also finished with five points. The top five in the men’s category was rounded out by Lulceni Mendes, who scored 4.5 points.
In the women’s competition, FIDE Master Jemima Paulo dominated the field with six points from six victories and one loss, securing the championship title. International Master Esperança Caxita followed in second place with five points.
EdivSnia Martins and Ana Domingo also scored five points, placing third and fourth, respectively. MF Luzia Pires completed the top five with 4.5 points.
The event, held at a venue in Luanda, was conducted using the Swiss system. Matches were rapid, with each lasting 15 minutes and featuring a three-second increment per move. A total of 33 athletes, comprising 18 men and 15 women, competed for the trophy at this event, which celebrated the 35th anniversary of the National Roads Institute of Angola (INEA). The first international edition of the Grand Prix took place three years ago at the INEA headquarters.
