Luanda – The National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) will open officially its electoral campaign Tuesday, 02 August, in Mbanza Kongo capital city of Zaire Province, ANGOP has learnt.
Aguiar Laurindo, FNLA secretary general, said that the event will be held on the date of the death of the party´s founder, Holden Roberto.
Therefore, before the opening of the election campaign, the party has scheduled for Saturday (30 July) activities to be held in Bengo and Luanda provinces for the launch of its campaign brigades in some municipalities.
With that, FNLA resumes its electoral campaign, after the release on Tuesday of the 33 militants arrested last Saturday.
The militants were released without formal charges, which will enable the resumption of the party electoral campaign.
Among the 33 militants, there are three candidates for parliament.
According to FNLA the arrest happened Saturday when militants were leaving an activity in the scope of the closing of the pre-campaign that took place in Calumbo, on the outskirts of Luanda.
On the way back, 500 metres from the party headquarters, the caravan came across a group of bikers being followed by the police.
Found on 7 July 1954, with the name Union of the Populations of Northern Angola (UPNA), it evolved to Union of the Populations of Angola (UPA) and finally adopted the current name which is FNLA, adopting the Christian democrat ideology based on Angolan nationalism.
Seven parties (MPLA, UNITA, PRS, FNLA, PHA, APN and P-NJANGO) and one coalition (CASA-CE) are participating in the 24 August elections.
This year’s elections, which will have the participation of Angolans in the diaspora for the first time, are the fifth ones in Angola´s history, after those of 1992, 2008, 2012 e 2017.
The last ballot was contested, on 23 August 2017, by six political forces, with the participation of 76.57% of the 9.3 million registered voters
