Electoral Commission Deemed Pillar in Angola’s Democracy

Luanda: The Chair of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Manuel Pereira da Silva, stated on Tuesday (19) in Luanda that the institution has been a fundamental pillar in ensuring the transparency and credibility of electoral processes in Angola. The statement was made during the ceremony marking the CNE's 33rd anniversary, during which he argued that the date should be more than symbolic, also representing a moment of rigorous evaluation, reflection, and projection for the future. "The motto of this anniversary, Electoral Commission: 33 years strengthening democracy in Angola, summarizes our commitment and dedication to the cause of democracy," he emphasized. He highlighted the work carried out over the last three decades, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

According to Angola Press News Agency, as part of the celebration, the CNE promoted debates on the current challenges of democracy, with a focus on the participation of women and young people, as well as the role of technology in electoral transparency. Manuel da Silva warned about the risks of disinformation, fake news, and hate speech circulating on social media, mainly among young people, warning of the negative consequences such practices can have on democratic debate. The CNE head thanked all the staff members who have contributed to strengthening democracy in Angola and for their commitment.

CNE's New Challenges: In turn, Joo de Almeida Martins, Secretary for Political and Electoral Affairs of the Central Committee of the MPLA Political Bureau, emphasized that, with the new Electoral Legislative Package approved by the National Assembly, the CNE will have to adapt to the legal requirements, advocating for ongoing training for its staff. The president of the political party PRS, Benedito Daniel, acknowledged that, despite the challenges, all parties see themselves in the CNE as a legitimate body for organizing and regulating elections. He emphasized the institution's contribution to building democracy, meeting the Angolan people's expectations. The event was held under the motto "Electoral Commission: 33 years strengthening democracy in Angola" and included panels on social media and women's engagement in elections, among other topics. The highlight of the celebrations was the awarding of honors to former CNE members in recognition of their services to Angolan democracy.
