Former Goalkeeper ‘Zé do Pau’ Dies at 82

Lubango: Alvaro Manuel Faria Gomes, widely recognized as "Zé do Pau," has passed away at the age of 82 in Lubango, located in the central Huila province. The news of his death on Sunday was confirmed by a family source, as reported by ANGOP. According to Angola Press News Agency, Zé do Pau was a significant figure in Huila, known for his contribution to soccer both as a player and a coach. His unique style and dedication to the sport left a lasting impression. Former national football team goalkeeper and associate Napoleo Brando commemorated him as a 'historic figure with an unmistakable style' who played a pivotal role in Angolan football history. Brando emphasized the impact of Zé do Pau's career, noting that his passing is a substantial loss for the nation, particularly for those close to him. He reminisced about Zé do Pau's distinctive approach, which included wearing a cap and chewing on a piece of wood during games, tactics he used to unsettle his opponents. Born in Huíla in 1943, Zé do Pau was a rev ered figure in the region. During the 1970s and 1980s, he played for various teams including Ferroviário da Huíla, Desportivo da Chela, and the Huíla national team, alongside notable players such as Marcelino and Seninho. Zé do Pau later transitioned into a coaching role, serving as the assistant coach for Grupo Desportivo da Chela under Joo Machado. His coaching career extended to various teams such as Mambroa do Huambo and Benfica do Lubango.
