Gap Between Young and Elderly Population in Hula is Significant – Census

Lubango: The results of the 2024 Census indicate that only 3.6% of the population of Hula is elderly, over 65 years of age, while those from zero to 14 represent 45.1%, which reveals a significant gap between the two age groups.

According to Angola Press News Agency, an increase in the proportion of elderly people was observed in the last decade, given that in the 2014 Census only 2% of the population was aged 65 or over, showing a gradual trend of demographic aging. The results presented at the beginning of the month and shown on the official website of the National Statistics Institute (INE) highlight that four out of every 10 people in Hula are under 15 years old.

The municipalities recording the highest percentages of population in the zero to 14 age group are Capunda Cavilongo (50.7%) and Chituto (49.4%), both emerging from the new Political-Administrative Division. Conversely, the municipality of Lubango has the lowest percentage in this age group at 39.9%.

For the elderly population, the municipalities of Matala and Palanca (the latter also new) have the lowest proportions, while Caconda, Viti Vivali (new), and Chicomba have the highest values, each with 5 percent.

The Definitive Results of the 2024 Census show that the population residing in Hula on September 19, 2024, was three million 302 thousand 866 inhabitants, with one million 599 thousand 066 men (48.4% of the total population) and one million 703 thousand 799 women (51.2%).
