Cunene: The Border Guard Police Unit (PGF) recorded at least 2,187 cases of border violations between the southern Angolan province of Cunene and the Republic of Namibia during the third quarter of this year, which is 235 more cases than in the same period in 2004. The cases amount to 1,211 failed entries and 976 failed exits, as announced this Saturday by spokesperson of the National Police in Cunene, Inspector Samuel Cassaco.
According to Angola Press News Agency, during the reporting period, 2,154 tax evasion cases were recorded, 29 related to the smuggling of petroleum products, and the remainder related to the smuggling of cigarettes, whiskey, and the destruction of flora. The violations resulted in the seizure of 30 vehicles, 11 motorcycles, 9,895 liters of fuel (5,815 of which were gasoline and 4,800 of which were diesel), 80 liters of motor oil, and a firearm.
Home appliances, vehicle accessories, construction materials, food, beverages, cosmetics, and other items were also among the seized goods from the neighboring Republic of Namibia. He noted that the vehicles and various products were handed over to the Santa Clara Customs office, while the fuel was forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC).
The province of Cunene shares a 460-kilometer border with the Republic of Namibia, 340 km of which is land border and 120 km is river border.
