Measles and Rubella Vaccination Campaign Shields Thousands of Children in Lunda Norte

Lunda Norte: Maria da Gra§a, a resident of Chitato, recounts a harrowing experience from 2024 when her eldest daughter contracted measles at the tender age of four. "It started with a fever, then the spots appeared. She became very weak. I was afraid I was going to lose her," Maria recalls with emotion. Though her daughter survived, the illness left lingering fears and scars.

According to African Press Organization, Maria's story is not unique. The municipalities of Chitato, Dundo, and Mussungue reported over 200 measles cases between November 2024 and March 2025, predominantly affecting children under five, the most susceptible age group.

"Measles is highly contagious and dangerous. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, diarrhea, blindness, and even lead to death," explains Augusto Muachissaco, Chitato's municipal health director. "Children between the ages of six months and four years are the most vulnerable. If we don't act now, cases will continue to rise, and more lives will be at risk."

In response to this health crisis, nearly 30,000 children across the three municipalities have received vaccinations, significantly enhancing community safety and awareness. Families are now better equipped to protect their children against potential health threats.

This vaccination initiative in Lunda Norte gains significance as it aligns with African Vaccination Week, celebrated under the theme "Vaccination for all is humanly possible." The campaign exemplifies the power of local initiatives, community support, and collective action in advancing the Great Recovery of Zero-Dose Children and safeguarding against preventable diseases.

Measles ranks among the world's most contagious diseases, yet it is entirely preventable through a safe and effective vaccine. Vaccinating represents an act of love, responsibility, and hope, paving the way toward the elimination of measles and the saving of lives.
