Luanda: The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ado de Almeida, paid tribute to female deputies on Friday, as part of the celebrations of the African Women's Day celebrated on July 31. The gesture of recognition was marked by the offering of bouquets of flowers to the parliamentarians, who wore African attire, symbolizing the appreciation of the role of women in society.
According to Angola Press News Agency, at another point in the ceremony, held in the Noble Hall of the National Assembly, Ado de Almeida met with the deputies for a group photo, as a sign of appreciation and recognition for the women's contribution to parliamentary work. Speaking to the press, the president of the UNITA Parliamentary Group, Deputy Albertina Ngolo, stated that a nation where women occupy decision-making spaces, participate in all areas of economic life, and are integrated into production and development processes has better conditions to prosper.
The MPLA deputy and general secretary of the Angolan Women's Organization (OMA), Emlia Carlota Dias, highlighted that one cannot talk about Africa without talking about the face of women. The parliamentarian stressed that celebrating African Women's Day means recognizing the irreplaceable role of women in building the family, the economy, institutions, and peace.
She added that the date also represents the recognition of the achievements already made and the renewal of the commitment to all African women, in favor of equal opportunities and the full development of their potential. Emlia Carlota Dias acknowledged the prevailing obstacles and the resilience of African women, considering that the celebration of July 31 in Angola also constitutes an opportunity to reflect on the role of women in public life and in the national political scene.
The MP emphasized that the presence of Angolan women has registered significant progress and defended the need to continue investing in their training, preparation, and education in order to preserve and expand the achievements already attained. African Women's Day is celebrated on July 31, a date established in 1962 during the Conference of African Women in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
