Luanda: The new toll rates on Angola's National Road Network have come into effect today, with a formal ceremony marking the change held in Barra do Kwanza, municipality of Belas, Luanda. This initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing (MINOPUH) to enhance road infrastructure across the country.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the new rates, established by Presidential Decree No. 147/26, dated August 18, range from 250 to 85,000 kwanzas based on vehicle class and gross weight. At non-border posts, fees start at 250 kwanzas for motorcycles with an engine capacity up to 125 cubic centimeters, escalating to 7,000 kwanzas for vehicles or trailers with a gross weight over 16,000 kilograms. Conversely, border toll booths impose fees starting at Kz 2,500 for the same motorcycles and going up to 85,000 kwanzas for heavier vehicles.
The Ministry further explains that the toll differentiation considers vehicle weight and its impact on road surfaces, aiming to sustain maintenance, conservation, and preservation of the National Road Network. This initiative falls under the Toll Booth Installation Plan, approved via Presidential Decree No. 13/25 on January 22.
The ceremony not only marks the implementation of the new rates but also aims to disseminate the updated toll collection rules, criteria, and toll booth operations. Currently, non-border toll points include Barra do Kwanza and Serra da Leba in Hula, while the first phase of border toll booths is being implemented at Massabi, Yema, Noqui, Luvo, Santa Clara, and Luau.
Future toll installations, as outlined in the second phase of the program, will be in regions such as Miconje, Quimbata, Tchitato, Cassai, Jimbe, Rivungo, and Calueque, reflecting the Angolan Executive's commitment to ensuring long-term road sustainability.
