Luanda: Over five million residents are set to benefit from the "Quilonga Grande" Water Supply System, currently under construction in Bom Jesus. President Joo Louren§o visited the site on Wednesday to assess the project's progress, which aims to deliver potable water to residents in the region and the province of Luanda.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the project, managed by the Chinese company Sinoydro, commenced in February 2025 in the province of Icolo e Bengo. It is anticipated to create around 600 direct jobs during its construction phase. The "Quilonga Grande" project, scheduled for completion in December 2026, was reviewed by President Louren§o during his second visit to the site, where he received updates from the Minister of Energy and Water, Joo Baptista Borges, and engineer Edmundo Frederico.
The project, with a budget of US$491 million, is a component of System 5, which involves extracting raw water from the Kwanza River and processing up to 518,000 cubic meters daily at a water treatment plant. It also encompasses the establishment of 11 distribution centers, a water network extending over 2,230 kilometers, 362,225 household connections, and 1,240 public fountains.
Key infrastructure features include a 110-kilometer pipeline with pipes up to 1,600 millimeters in diameter, equipped with 134 control boxes, and advanced fiber optic remote management and telemetry systems for real-time operations.
The "Quilonga Grande" initiative, in conjunction with the Bita System also under construction in the Belas municipality of Luanda, is projected to augment the water supply capacity to serve up to 10 million residents of the Angolan capital by 2027. These projects mark a significant advancement in addressing the increasing urban demand and the Angolan government's commitment to enhancing the living standards of its people.
During his field visit, President Joo Louren§o, along with his aides, also inspected the ongoing construction of the Bita Water Supply Project in the Belas municipality of Luanda.
