Pedal© Hospital to Enhance Medical Services with Advanced Facilities in Luanda

Luanda: Angolan Health Minister Slvia Lutucuta announced on Tuesday that the soon-to-be-inaugurated Pedal© Hospital in Luanda will focus on providing solutions for highly complex areas of medicine, including stroke treatment, imaging, oncology, and transplantation.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister made these remarks following President Joo Louren§o's visit to the hospital's construction site. The hospital is set to implement the country's first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system within the public sector, alongside advancements in imaging and radiation oncology. The President toured the facility for over an hour, receiving updates from the project coordinator on its progress, which is currently 91 percent complete. Although an exact inauguration date was not provided, the Health Minister expressed confidence that the opening would occur soon.

Minister Lutucuta conveyed President Louren§o's satisfaction with the project's developments and highlighted his commitment to enhancing the social sector, particularly in health, through various investments. She emphasized the hospital's capabilities, including a transplant area and a focus on breast cancer treatment within its oncology department. The facility will also enhance physiotherapy services.

The Pedal© Hospital, located in the Gamek neighborhood of Samba municipality, will accommodate 144 beds and is equipped to deliver services across multiple medical specialties. As a tertiary-level health unit, it will feature an intensive care unit, intermediate care, operating rooms, laboratories, and hemodialysis services with 33 chairs. The construction, which began in 2012, faced delays but resumed in 2024 with a renewed contract valued at USD 67,139,373.69.

Wedo Development is constructing the hospital under the supervision of DAR Angola on a 42,157 square meter area. The infrastructure includes a three-story main building housing emergency services, outpatient consultations, imaging, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine departments. Additional facilities encompass technical areas, a laundry room, a morgue, a kitchen, a hospital pharmacy, and a waste disposal unit. The technical area employs over 200 workers, mainly young Angolans, and is equipped with generators, refrigeration systems, and transformers.

The hospital complex includes a parking lot with 136 spaces, a helipad for air medical transport, a six-story apartment building with 20 two-bedroom apartments, and a four-story training center. This visit by President Louren§o is his second in four months, highlighting the project's significance.

Additionally, President Louren§o, accompanied by his aides, inspected the progress of the Kilamba Burns Hospital, also under construction in the municipality of Belas, Luanda.
