The upcoming local elections will enable candidates among people with disabilities to secure 279 seats in local councils, as stipulated in article 27 of decree law No. 2023, President of the Independent High Electoral Authority (ISIE), Farouk Bouasker said Friday.
He was speaking at a national conference in Tunis, organised by the ISIE in collaboration with national organisations and associations defending the rights of people with disabilities. The event is part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness among this category of citizens about the upcoming electoral milestone.
"People with disabilities can secure more than 279 seats in local councils if they stand regularly and not just as people with disabilities," Bouasker added, noting that one seat is reserved for people with disabilities in each local council.
On polling day, December 24, there will be a draw between candidates competing for the same seat within this category.
Preliminary results of the local council elections will be announced no later than 27 December. In the event of a run-off, the elections will be held at the end of January 2024 or the beginning of February of the same year.
