Luanda: President Joo Louren§o arrived in Luanda on Thursday from Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium, where he attended the high-level summit on the strategic perspectives of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) for the 2026-2030 period. At the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, Joo Louren§o was received by the Angola Vice-President, Esperan§a da Costa, and other dignitaries.
According to Angola Press News Agency, during the summit, the acting President of the African Union (AU) called on the international community to commit to mobilizing US$ 9 billion for GAVI's initiatives for the 2026-2030 period. He emphasized that this funding would enable Africa to vaccinate 500 million children and potentially save between 8 to 9 million lives. President Louren§o conveyed that Africa is not merely a beneficiary but is prepared to contribute to a new era of global immunization.
The President also announced that Angola is undertaking an ambitious training program for 38,000 professionals in crucial sectors to enhance primary health care. Additionally, in Brussels, President Louren§o engaged in a working meeting with the European Council Chairperson, Ant³nio Costa. The discussions centered around bilateral cooperation and the European Union's support for the Lobito Corridor through the Global Gateway initiative.
GAVI, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is a public-private alliance that includes governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the World Bank, the pharmaceutical industry, and civil society organizations. Its innovative model allows it to negotiate reduced prices with manufacturers and ensure the sustainability of vaccination programs in the countries it supports. To date, 19 countries have fully assumed the financing of their own vaccination programs, highlighting the partnership's effectiveness.
