Maseru: The President of the Republic of Angola and African Union Chair, Joo Louren§o, has urged Member States to increase investment in education to equip children with essential skills for securing decent employment and playing a significant role in the continent's development.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Louren§o delivered this message to the continent on the 35th anniversary of the Adoption of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The statement was released at a conference in Maseru, capital of Lesotho, under the theme 'Reflect, Renew and Reaffirm the Commitment'.
President Louren§o emphasized that strategic investment in education is crucial for transforming Africa's youth potential into a driving force for progress, stability, and shared prosperity. He stressed the moral and political responsibility of African leaders to ensure quality education that enhances digital and scientific literacy, fosters critical thinking, values creativity, and promotes lifelong learning.
He highlighted Africa's demographic reality, noting that the continent is home to the world's youngest population. In 2021, Africa had approximately 650 million children, and by 2023, nearly 40% of its population was under 15 years old. Projections suggest that by 2055, Africa could have nearly one billion children, representing a significant portion of the global youth population.
President Louren§o pointed out that this demographic trend offers a transformative opportunity to shape Africa's future. He emphasized that the actions taken by countries today will determine the future that children will inherit and lead.
In light of this, he urged for a firm and strategic investment in education to prepare future generations for the challenges of a rapidly evolving world, characterized by significant technological advancements.
