Luanda: Angolan President Joo Louren§o held a meeting on Friday in Luanda with his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan, to discuss bilateral cooperation and the historic ties of friendship between the two nations. The leaders also reviewed regional issues, focusing on the situation in Southern and Central Africa and other current international affairs.
According to Angola Press News Agency, President Samia Suluhu Hassan arrived in Luanda for a 48-hour working visit aimed at strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between Angola and Tanzania. A significant event during her visit is the inauguration of the President Julius Nyerere Burn Hospital, a health facility named after a pivotal figure in Tanzania's history and the African liberation movement.
The cooperation between Angola and Tanzania spans various sectors, including politics, diplomacy, defense, security, agriculture, oil and gas, health, education, tourism, economy, and infrastructure. Diplomatic ties were established on August 25, 1981, rooted in the solidarity and cooperation forged during Africa's liberation struggles.
A major milestone in reviving bilateral cooperation was the scheduled 2024 II Session of the Angola-Tanzania Bilateral Joint Commission in Zanzibar, following the first meeting held in Dar es Salaam 35 years prior. This visit follows the recent 3rd Session of the Permanent Joint Commission on Cooperation, where both countries pledged to enhance relations in strategic areas.
The bilateral talks identified key areas of cooperation such as political cooperation, defense, trade, agriculture, industry, mineral resources, tourism, transport, science, technology, health, and education. In energy, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on oil and gas, focusing on boosting cooperation and exchanging expertise in these industries.
Additional agreements included cooperation in health and visa exemption for diplomatic and service passport holders. President Samia Suluhu Hassan's state visit to Angola in 2025 further cemented the bilateral relationship, with both nations expressing interest in deepening political and economic ties and maximizing market opportunities.
