President Joo Louren§o Reflects on Angola’s Struggles and Achievements Post-Independence

Luanda: President Joo Louren§o recalled on Tuesday in Luanda, the main challenges faced by Angola throughout the 50 years of Independence, underlining the role of national resilience in preserving sovereignty and consolidating peace.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the Head of State reflected on the difficult moments in the country's recent history marked by the struggle for the affirmation and defense of sovereignty, in an adverse international context. He highlighted the obstacles and complex situations Angola had to overcome during the Cold War, emphasizing the nation's tenacious fight to preserve its independence and national sovereignty.

The Angolan statesman noted that after achieving victory over Portuguese colonialism, the country had to confront the apartheid regime, which posed a constant threat to the peoples of Southern Africa. He warned of the risk Angola faced of being colonized twice due to the aggressive stance of the South African regime, which was based on the idea of racial superiority and segregation as a societal model.

Louren§o highlighted the solidarity among Southern African countries during this period, which led to the formation of the Frontline Movement. This movement was designed to coordinate efforts and strengthen the region's capacity to resist the apartheid regime. He acknowledged the dedication required during this challenging phase, noting the leadership role of former President Jos© Eduardo dos Santos in conducting diplomatic and other critical actions.

Despite these adversities, the President emphasized that Angola remained steadfast in defending its territorial integrity and independence, contributing to the total liberation of the southern region of the continent. The 50th anniversary celebrations of National Independence are being attended by thousands of national citizens and foreign delegations, including Heads of State and Government.
