Resistance of Cuito Cuanavale Heroes Should Inspire Youth – Deputy Governor

Luanda: The northern Zaire Province’s Deputy Governor for Technical Services and Infrastructure, ngela Diogo, stated on Friday in the town of Tomboco that the sacrifice, determination, and spirit of resistance shown by the heroes of the Cuito Cuanavale Battle should continue to inspire the current generation in transforming challenges into opportunities for the country’s socioeconomic development.

According to Angola Press News Agency, speaking at the provincial ceremony held in advance to mark March 23, Southern Africa Liberation Day, on behalf of Governor Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, Diogo emphasized that the achievements of the Cuito Cuanavale heroes remain a driving force behind the Angolan Executive’s efforts to implement projects with a social impact for the population’s benefit.

Diogo asserted that the best way to honor those who sacrificed for the liberation of the southern region of the continent is to continue implementing actions of public interest for the well-being of all Angolans. She mentioned that the Provincial Government is committed to building more infrastructure in education, health, energy, water, and communication sectors.

Furthermore, Diogo highlighted the importance of young people’s academic and professional training for their integration into the job market as a priority for the local government.

Historian Mouzinho Raimundo Makiesse, invited to discuss ‘The impact of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale on the liberation of Southern Africa’, explained that the event marked the end of conflicts and led to the independence of many countries in the southern region. He noted that a major milestone of the battle was the end of apartheid, the segregationist regime in South Africa from 1948 to 1992.

The event, held under the theme ‘Angola 50 years: preserving and valuing the feats, building a better future’, took place at the cinema club in Tomboco. It was attended by Zaire’s vice-governor for the Political, Social, and Economic sector, Afonso Nzolameso, former combatants, government members, students, and traditional and religious authorities, among other guests.

The Cuito Cuanavale Battle, a military confrontation that occurred between November 15, 1987, and March 23, 1988, is regarded as the largest battle of the Angolan civil war and the longest on the African continent since World War II.
