Rosatom Claims Readiness to Build Nuclear Unit in Burkina Faso Within Five Years

Leningrad: Rosatom, the leading entity in the Russian nuclear sector, announced its capability to construct a nuclear unit in Burkina Faso within a five-year span, given that certain prerequisites are met by the partner nation. This declaration was made during a visit by a Burkinabe delegation to the Leningrad nuclear power plant.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Rosatom officials indicated that their experience from constructing a nuclear unit between 2009 and 2017 has enhanced their ability to design, build, and commission a unit within five years. The company emphasized that the readiness and preparedness of the partner country are crucial for the swift progression of the project.

Valery Zhemchugov, Rosatom's Acting Director General, stated that the partner country must meet "high-tech requirements," train qualified personnel, and implement the necessary legal frameworks. He noted that the typical timeframe for building a nuclear power plant is five years, contingent on the country's existing experience and the level of cooperation.

Rosatom, which operates in 60 countries worldwide, expressed its willingness to establish operations in Burkina Faso, conditional upon the signing of relevant agreements. The company recalled its successful project in Iran, achieved despite external pressures, underscoring its commitment to fulfilling its obligations.

Burkina Faso, under the leadership of President Captain Ibrahim Traor©, has shown interest in adopting Russian nuclear technology to boost the country's energy output and reinforce its strategic independence in the energy sector. A substantial Burkinabe delegation, headed by Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries Yacouba Zabr© Gouba, is currently in Russia to explore bilateral cooperation and potentially sign an intergovernmental agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
