Sfax: Building in Ennour neighbourhood housing some 500 sub-Saharan migrants evacuated

Sfax: A building in Ennour neighbourhood in Sfax south housing some 500 sub-Saharan migrants was evacuated on Monday by security units, on the instructions of the Public Prosecutor to the Sfax-2 Court of First Instance.

“The evacuation of this building was carried out following several complaints from residents of the Ennour neighbourhood and flat owners about the worsening sanitary conditions in the building,” Public Prosecutor at the Sfax-2 Court of First Instance and official spokesman for the court Hichem Ksibi explained in a statement to TAP.

The evacuation operation was carried out in an uproar, after some migrants targeted security officers by throwing stones, causing minor injuries among them. A group of no less than twenty people were arrested, involved in unrest, violence and attacks against security officers, the same source pointed out.

First delegate in charge of managing the affairs of the governorate of Sfax Mohamed Nafti Kdouda underlined that “the complete evacuation of the said building w
as carried out successfully, underlining that the rights of the migrants will be preserved.”

The evacuees were brought into contact with the security authorities, with a view to determining their identities and opening a set of investigations into their involvement in acts of violence and theft, he said.

Coordination with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) was also undertaken to facilitate the return of certain migrants to their home countries, while the regional health department and the municipality of Sfax launched an operation to sterilise and clean the building.

“Since the beginning of February, the Tunis Anti-Crime Brigade has initiated an investigation into this building at the behest of the Public Prosecutor,” he explained.
