Ombadja: The Municipal Administrator of Ombadja, Cunene Province, Elizeth Mwamelungi, on Saturday called on traditional authorities and community leaders to help mobilise citizens of voting age to update their voter registration details. The official made the appeal during a consultation meeting with traditional authorities aimed at strengthening partnerships and hearing the main concerns of local communities.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Mwamelungi emphasized the focus on the nationwide voter data update and "proof of life" process for citizens aged 18 and over. Additionally, she discussed identifying effective ways of distributing identity cards locally. The initiative seeks to ensure greater mobilisation of the population to regularise their data, thereby contributing to the municipality's administrative and electoral organisation. Mwamelungi stressed the importance of community leaders encouraging citizens to visit the One-Stop Public Service Desks (BUAP) to ensure they can exercise their right to vote in the 2027 general elections.
Mwamelungi explained that community leaders are key partners in grassroots governance, as they are responsible for bringing information and development initiatives to neighbourhoods and rural settlements. She reaffirmed her commitment to working with traditional authorities for the well-being of the population and ensuring that the voter registration drive reaches every citizen of voting age.
Cunene Province has 21 BUAP units distributed across its 14 municipalities, staffed by 262 professionals, including 140 working at fixed stations and 122 at mobile units serving remote communities. The process is also supported by 14 civic education agents, 40 drivers, and nine technicians and consultants. Official electoral registration is the process of automatic and continuous registration of adult Angolan citizens, based on the direct transfer of data from the civil identification database, through the identity card, to the database of adult citizens.
According to data from the 2024 Census, Cunene has a population of 1,806,417, distributed across 14 municipalities - Cuanhama, Cahama, Cuvelai, Curoca, Ombadja, Namacunde, Cafima, Nehone, Chiedi, Mupa, Chissuata, Naulila, Chitado and Humbe - and 10 communes.
