Vandalism in Angola’s Energy and Water Sectors Results in Over USD 50 Million Loss Annually

Luanda: Acts of vandalism and theft within Angola's energy and water sectors are causing annual losses exceeding 50 million US dollars, impacting the nation's ability to expand its electrical network. This alarming situation was highlighted by the Minister of Energy and Water, Joo Baptista Borges, who emphasized that these funds could otherwise be used to extend electricity and water distribution systems to more residents.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the minister revealed that the scale of vandalism and theft in recent times has reached concerning levels. The consequences are not only financial, affecting the state directly, but also disrupt services to families and reduce companies' revenues. Equipment in these sectors is costly and predominantly imported, making the impact of such acts even more severe.

The minister provided an example of the theft of suction cups, essential for maintaining pressure in water pipes. These components, costing around 500 thousand dollars, are being sold illicitly for a mere five thousand kwanzas. Additionally, a recent incident involving the vandalism of 28 energy transmission towers in Malanje province resulted in a loss exceeding seven million dollars.

Joo Baptista Borges stressed the urgent need to impose stricter penalties for vandalism, expedite related court cases, and encourage citizens to report such crimes. He underscored that these criminal activities are replicated daily across the nation, leading to substantial financial losses.

The minister appealed for a collective effort in addressing this challenge, noting that it is not solely a sectoral issue but one requiring the engagement of police, judicial bodies, and the public. He warned of the risk of hindering the country's progress if these issues are not addressed collaboratively.

During his interview, Minister Borges also reflected on the sector's achievements over the past 50 years and shared his vision for its future.
