According to Angola Press News Agency, the opinions were gathered on the eve of National Hero's Day, which is celebrated on September 17th, a date dedicated to the memory of Angola's first President and Founder of the Nation. Student Joo Jos© described Agostinho Neto as a remarkable figure in Angolan history, who dedicated his knowledge and determination to the struggle for independence.
For young people, National Hero's Day commemorates the resistance of the Angolan people to colonial rule and provides an opportunity for new generations to learn more about those who contributed to the building of the country. Joo Jos© considered Agostinho Neto a role model for young people, especially for his example of dedication to the national cause and for the importance of young people assuming their role in the development of Angola.
Alberto Francisco, in turn, understands that the date symbolizes the collective effort of Angolans who fought against colonial oppression and contributed to the achievement of freedom. Adelino Vilela drew attention to Agostinho Neto's multifaceted career, marked by political involvement, academic training, and literary production. "It is important that new generations know his legacy and learn from the writings he left behind," he stated.
Among the poet's works that she most appreciated, student Daniela Gon§alves highlighted "Havemos de Voltar" and "Caminho do Mato," and considered Agostinho Neto's poetry a way to better understand the history and feelings of a generation that lived through the struggle for independence. Agostinho Neto was born on September 17, 1922, in Caxicane, municipality of Icolo e Bengo, and died in 1979. He was the first President of Angola and one of the main figures in the national liberation struggle.
Beyond his political career, he distinguished himself as a poet and writer, with works such as "Sacred Hope," "The Impossible Renunciation," and "Dawn." Throughout the country, September 17th is celebrated as National Hero's Day, in homage to his figure and his contribution to the achievement of National Independence. The main event of the commemorations will take place this year in the city of Sumbe, Cuanza Sul province.
